The mechanism connecting a barrel of distillate to a box of cereal on a grocery shelf is surprisingly direct. Those two series serve as reference points for a large share of the U.S. freight market. A key question is whether cheaper fuel actually lowers the total cost of moving freight or whether carriers absorb the savings before they reach shippers and, by extension, consumers.
