Rowenta is recalling cordless vacuums that can catch fire and burn users

Rowenta cordless vacuum cleaners sold in the United States and across Europe are being pulled from shelves and homes after regulators on multiple continents determined their lithium-ion batteries can overheat, ignite, and burn users during normal operation. The affected models, the X-Force Flex 14.60 Animal (RH99A2U1) and the X-Force Flex 15.60 Animal (RH99F2U1), along with a replacement battery bearing date codes starting with 23 or 24, are now subject to formal recall actions in the U.S. and safety alerts in the European Union. The near-simultaneous regulatory response across borders raises questions about how long the defect was known before agencies acted and whether the manufacturer disclosed the problem proactively.

Parallel recalls across three countries trace back to one battery flaw

The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission issued a recall covering both X-Force Flex models and the standalone replacement battery pack, model ZR0097U2 with date codes beginning 23 or 24. The agency classified the hazard as a risk of serious injury from fire and burns, citing a lithium-ion battery that can overheat and ignite. Consumers who own either vacuum or the battery pack are told to stop using the product immediately and contact Rowenta for a free replacement battery.

Separately, a European Safety Gate alert numbered SR/00944/26, with France listed as the notifying country, describes the same core problem: a defective component inside the battery pack can cause overheating during use. That alert, reproduced by Taiwan’s standards agency, covers the same X Force Flex 14.60 and 15.60 models and identifies the risk as burns and fire. In Poland, the consumer protection office UOKiK recorded a separate notification from Groupe SEB Polska, the regional arm of Rowenta’s parent company, covering batteries for Tefal-branded versions of the X-FORCE 14.60 and X-FORCE 15.60 manufactured before December 2024, according to Poland’s UOKiK bulletin.

The Polish notice introduces an important wrinkle: the products there carry the Tefal brand rather than Rowenta, even though the model numbers and hazard description are functionally identical. Both Rowenta and Tefal are owned by Groupe SEB, and the company appears to have sold the same vacuum platform under different brand names depending on the market. The pre-December 2024 manufacturing cutoff cited in Poland suggests the defect is tied to a specific production window rather than a permanent design flaw, which points toward a batch-level issue in the battery supply chain.

A battery supplier problem that regulators found separately

None of the public notices explicitly name the battery supplier, but the consistent pattern across three jurisdictions points to a common component rather than unrelated failures. The U.S. recall singles out a detachable pack that can be purchased separately, while the European alerts focus on batteries integrated into complete vacuums. That distinction matters: a shared pack design can be installed across several product lines, multiplying the impact of a single defective lot.

The French-led Safety Gate entry and the Polish notification both describe overheating during ordinary use, with no mention of misuse, physical damage, or third-party chargers. That language typically signals a defect that regulators consider inherent to the product as sold, not contingent on how consumers treat it. The U.S. commission’s decision to recall both vacuums and loose batteries reinforces the view that the risk is systemic to the affected packs rather than to a particular configuration.

Yet the alerts appear to have been developed in parallel rather than through a single coordinated announcement. The U.S. recall addresses Rowenta-branded machines and one battery model, the French notice names the Rowenta X-Force Flex series, and the Polish filing focuses on Tefal-branded equivalents with a production-date cutoff. That staggered, brand-specific pattern suggests national authorities were notified separately by Groupe SEB subsidiaries or distributors, each working through its own regulatory channel.

It is not clear from the documents whether regulators first learned of the problem from the company or from incident reports. None of the public summaries specify the number of overheating cases, fires, or injuries, which can make it harder for consumers to gauge the real-world risk. Still, the language used by all three authorities – emphasizing fire and burn hazards and ordering an immediate stop to use – is unusually strong for a household appliance recall.

What owners should do and what the case reveals

For consumers, the guidance is straightforward even if the corporate backstory is not. Owners of Rowenta X-Force Flex 14.60 or 15.60 vacuums in the United States are instructed to stop using the machines and any spare packs matching the recalled battery model, then contact the company for a free replacement. In Europe, users of Rowenta or Tefal versions with the same platform should check model numbers, manufacturing dates, and any recall tools offered by local distributors, and follow national instructions on replacing or returning the batteries.

The episode highlights how a single flawed component can ripple across brands and borders when manufacturers reuse hardware platforms. It also underscores the limits of fragmented recall systems: U.S. consumers see Rowenta, French notices mention Rowenta again, while Polish shoppers encounter Tefal, even though they are effectively dealing with the same underlying product. For safety-critical parts like lithium-ion batteries, that patchwork can leave owners unsure whether an overseas warning applies to the device in their home.

At the same time, the relatively swift alignment of U.S., EU, and Polish actions shows that regulators are increasingly attuned to shared risks in globalized supply chains. As more appliances rely on high-density rechargeable batteries, the Rowenta and Tefal case may serve as a template for how agencies track, communicate, and coordinate responses when a defect in one component threatens to ignite thousands of otherwise ordinary household products.
