PQL is recalling about 186,520 LED light fixtures because the panels can loosen inside and start a fire

About 186,520 High Bay Linear LED light fixtures sold by PQL are being pulled from commercial use after federal regulators determined that retaining pins inside the units can degrade, allowing an energized LED board to come loose and create a fire risk. The recall, filed on Feb. 26, 2026, covers fixtures commonly mounted in warehouses, factories, and gymnasiums, spaces where flammable materials and high ceilings make a falling, live electrical panel especially dangerous. PQL is offering free replacement retaining pins or on-site repair as a remedy.

Why degrading retaining pins in 186,520 fixtures demand attention now

The core defect is mechanical, not electrical. Plastic retaining pins that hold the LED board in place inside the fixture housing can break down over time. Once those pins fail, the board shifts or detaches while still carrying current. That combination of movement and live voltage is what produces the fire hazard identified in the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission’s official recall, according to federal regulators.

High-bay LED fixtures are designed for spaces with ceilings typically 15 feet or higher. Many of the buildings that use them-distribution centers, manufacturing floors, indoor sports facilities-run lighting for well beyond a standard eight-hour shift. Some operate around the clock. That extended runtime subjects the plastic pins to sustained heat cycling, which accelerates material fatigue. Facilities logging more than 12 continuous hours of daily operation face a steeper degradation curve than those on a single-shift schedule, a pattern that could be confirmed by cross-referencing failure reports from 24-hour operations against standard-shift sites. No such comparative data has been released publicly, but the basic physics of polymer fatigue under thermal stress make the connection plausible.

The practical risk is straightforward: a loosened LED board hanging above pallets of cardboard, racks of textiles, or gym flooring can ignite materials below if it arcs or overheats after losing its thermal path to the fixture housing. Even without visible flames, localized overheating inside a metal housing can char wiring, trip breakers, and force unplanned shutdowns of large commercial spaces while electricians assess damage and perform repairs.

A repeated failure mode across LED fixture brands

PQL’s recall is not the first time this exact defect has surfaced. An earlier action by the CPSC targeted Best Lighting Products for the same hazard in its own high-bay LED fixtures. In that case, too, plastic pins securing an LED board could degrade and allow an energized board to come loose, posing a fire risk. The near-identical language in both recall notices, including the one outlining the Best Lighting recall, points to a shared design vulnerability across manufacturers rather than a one-off production error at a single factory.

New York’s Division of Homeland Security and Emergency Services republished the federal PQL notice, extending its reach to state agencies and commercial building operators who may not monitor CPSC alerts directly. By circulating the recall through its state safety bulletin, the agency effectively turned a national consumer warning into a targeted advisory for facility managers, school districts, and local governments that rely on high-bay lighting in large public buildings.

The CPSC’s own Office of Inspector General and the SaferProducts.gov database served as channels through which reports on the defect were tracked, though neither has published detailed incident narratives or laboratory test results specific to the PQL units. The absence of reported injuries or confirmed fires in the official record does not diminish the scale of exposure. With about 186,520 units in the field, even a small failure rate could translate into hundreds or thousands of compromised fixtures, many installed directly above high-value inventory or occupied spaces.

What affected facilities should do now

For building operators, the immediate priority is identification. The recalled PQL high-bay linear fixtures are typically labeled on the housing or driver compartment with model and date codes that can be matched against the CPSC notice. Facility managers should inventory all high-bay LEDs in warehouses, production areas, gymnasiums, and similar spaces, documenting locations and quantities of any suspect units.

Once identified, operators should contact PQL using the instructions in the federal recall notice to arrange for replacement retaining pins or on-site repair. Because the hazard stems from internal mechanical degradation, visual inspection from the floor will not reliably reveal which fixtures are at greatest risk. Until remedial work is completed, some facilities may choose to de-energize affected circuits in areas where a falling or overheating board would pose an especially high consequence, such as above flammable storage, production bottlenecks, or crowded assembly areas.

Longer term, the PQL and Best Lighting recalls highlight a broader design lesson for the lighting industry: critical support components inside energized fixtures should be specified with generous safety margins for heat, time, and mechanical stress. For end users, that means asking more pointed questions about internal fastening methods and component testing when procuring high-bay LEDs, particularly for 24/7 operations.

For now, the recall gives facilities a clear path: locate the fixtures, work with PQL on repairs, and document the corrective actions. Taking those steps promptly turns a latent fire hazard into a managed maintenance task-and reduces the odds that a small plastic pin becomes the weak link in a critical lighting system.
